Pioneering knowledge sharing for climate change adaptation

Do you have an idea that would allow local communities in Africa to better access and share knowledge on climate change adaptation?
AfricaAdapt’s Knowledge Sharing Innovation Fund offers grants of up to US$6,500 for new knowledge sharing initiatives about climate change adaptation that effectively engage ‘hard to reach’ and marginalised communities.

The following will provide an overview of the aims of the fund and how to submit an expression of interest from 9th August to 20 August, 2010.
Why a Knowledge Sharing Innovation Fund?

This fund seeks to support small-scale projects that offer innovative and practical ideas and strategies for communicating and sharing between different stakeholder groups, opinions concerning vulnerability to climate change, impacts and adaptation responses. It is aimed at initiatives proposed by African research groups, community-based organisations, co-operatives, networks and other local institutions in either urban or rural locations.
What are we looking for?
Examples of innovative knowledge sharing could include knowledge sharing activities from the performing arts (theatre performances, songs…), radio/tv broadcasts and phone-ins, art works, videos, comics ... the essential element is that it engages poor and/or marginalised groups in ways they can learn from and share useful knowledge on climate change.
Proposals should seek to address one of the following adaptation issues and principles:
1. Creating awareness of climate change, including vulnerability, impacts and adaptation particularly among marginalised communities.
2. Conservation of the environment (sustainable agriculture, desertification, livestock, forestry, livelihoods, etc.) threatened by climate change.
3. Issues connecting health and climate change
4. Urban infrastructure and climate change
5. Disaster Risk Reduction and climate change
6. Gender and climate change
7. Children and climate change
8. Promoting the principle of inclusion considering marginalised groups (women, children, disable, elderly, indigenous communities).
9. Other similar concerns, please explain.

Our Selection Criteria will include:
A. Lead applicant is based in Africa. The competition is open to research, local and civil society organisations, cooperatives and community networks across Africa. Organisations must be registered in their host country and evidence of registration (reference no. date and place of registration) provided for the full proposal. International organisations may apply provided that they are registered in Africa and have collaboration with partners in Africa. In this case, the African partners will submit the proposal but preference will be given to applications exclusively from local African organisations.
B. Experience in working on issues related to climate change
C. Experience in working with marginalised/hard-to-reach groups
D. Communication skills and knowledge sharing experience
E. Demonstrated interest of marginalised community/group to get involved in the knowledge sharing process.
F. Sustainability of the knowledge sharing strategy.
How to Apply?
The selection process will include two-stages.
• In the first stage, a 2-page expression of interest should be submitted. A template for expressions of interest can be found below.
• Short listed applicants from the first stage will be invited to develop a full proposal using an application form provided by AfricaAdapt.
Timeline: Length of projects should not exceed six (06) months.
Budget: AfricaAdapt expects to fund 6 projects. As a guideline, budgets should not exceed $US 6,500.
Expressions of Interest must be submitted preferably by email latest by 20 August, 2010. (Submissions made by post arrive before 20 August, 2010 and should be mailed to:
